2.15 pm Thursday July 15 via Zoom CUNARD HISTORY AND GLAMOROUS STARS Steve Herra

As we have been unable to arrange a group visit this year owing to the uncertainties brought about by the COVID-19 virus, we have instead organised a virtual outing brought to us by Steve Herra who has worked throughout his career for Cunard, most recently as a purser on the QE2. His talk will be based upon the history of Cunard from 1840 until the present day and will include some of the more famous liners although not the full…

GOOD NEWS FROM AFGHANISTAN, JIM HOLMES, 15.4.21

We were given a real insight into village life in Afghanistan this month. ‘Times and Seasons, People and Places’: a talk by Revd. David Sargent

U3A members were offered a rich afternoon of aesthetic delight last Thursday when Revd. David Sargent gave a poetry reading enhanced by most atmospheric photographs. David did not, however, offer a blandly soothing afternoon of  beauty and sentiment but included the challenges our landscape, and life, bring. …

EMILY ATHERTON ON THE HERALD

EMILY ATHERTON ON THE HERALD

The monthly speaker at February’s meeting of the Penrith and North Lakes U3A group was Emily Atherton, editor of the Cumberland and Westmorland Herald. She took the group through the trials and tribulations of the local press over the past few years, indicating the particular issues our own Herald has faced.  Local newspapers have been in the doldrums for several years with a few giants such as Newsquest buying up the smaller businesses and thereby dominating and transforming independent, quality…

EDEN BAROQUE, 17 DECEMBER, 2020

EDEN BAROQUE, 17 DECEMBER, 2020

Katharine May and John Sanderson of Eden Baroque moved into our area, attracted by the landscape in which they enjoy fell-walking and cycling, and have become a significant part of the local musical scene very rapidly, establishing their own ‘Music Barn’ at Salkeld Dykes where John Upson’s Music Appreciation group enjoyed their wonderful recital last year. Delighted by this introduction, they seemed to be an ideal choice for our Christmas music this year, expecting that we would be enjoying their…
