As we have been unable to arrange a group visit this year owing to the uncertainties brought about by the COVID-19 virus, we have instead organised a virtual outing brought to us by Steve Herra who has worked throughout his career for Cunard, most recently as a purser on the QE2. His talk will be based upon the history of Cunard from 1840 until the present day and will include some of the more famous liners although not the full complement of nearly 250! He will also include stories about some of the glamorous stars and celebrities who sailed aboard Cunard ships including a number whom he has met in the course of his roles on board. In the course of his talk we will learn how Charles Dickens described the furnishings in his cabin aboard Britannia. Steve will also tell us about the actress who brought her gleaming white Rolls Royce on board Queen Mary and her own chickens as she demanded fresh eggs each day. Another tale will be of Elizabeth Taylor. Altogether, we should be able to enjoy an imaginary cruise from the comfort of our own homes without queasiness or significant cost!
